The Kaohsiung Export Processing Zone (Chinese: 高雄加工出口區; Pinyin: Gāoxióng jiāgōng chūkǒu qū) was established in 1965 and opened a year later. At the time, it was the only one of its kind in all of Asia.
At the time of its establishment, the EPZ encompassed a section of Kaohsiung harbour, within the bounds of which a set of generous tax incentives and duty reductions would be active. It proved to be a resounding success, attracting foreign investment, developing industrial capacities, reducing trade deficit by developing exports, creating job opportunities, and even being copied by the PRC, who established their equivalent Special Economic Zones.
