Huang Hsin-chieh

Huang Hsin-chieh (Chinese: 黃信介; Pinyin: Huáng Xìnjiè; 1928-1999) was a Taiwanese politician and a key figure of the Tangwai movement.

Early in his carreer, Huang had briefly been a member of the KMT, though he promptly left and began endorsing anti-KMT independents. He became one of the figureheads of the newly emerging Formosa faction, and was subsequently jailed in 1979 for his involvement with the Kaohsiung Incident. When charges were raised against him, the opposition movement recruited would-be president Chen Shui-bian to be his attorney, which he accepted. Chen's efforts were futile, but Huang was pardoned and released early in 1988, after which he promptly joined the newly formed Democratic Progressive Party.
