Contract manufacturing

Contract manufacturing is a process by which a large company outsources the manufacturing to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Taiwanese factory owners made use of this method extensively, since it saved them the cost of marketing and R&D, while allowing them to develop their manufacturing capacities and train their labourers. As the Taiwanese proverb bluntly puts it, "it's better to be a chicken's head than an ox's ass."
