1973 oil crisis

The 1973 oil crisis, caused an abrupt spike in global oil prices, which hit the oil dependant Taiwan especially hard. This proved to be a turning point for the KMT, who decided to begin the shift away from low-cost manufacturing as the engine of economic growth and emphasize technology, R&D and human capital.
